Corporate Inclusion Institute
Share |

Be part of the first city-wide program that expands organizational capacity for inclusion through the development and retention of critical talent. Over a period of nine months, Corporate Inclusion Institute (CII) participants engage in a comprehensive and carefully chosen set of learning opportunities that put them on a path toward breakthrough experiences with long-lasting positive impact.

The Corporate Inclusion Institute model for talent development is based on Inclusion Clusters. Cluster participants comprise four professionals:

  • Executive Sponsor - an executive who has demonstrated a commitment to diversity and inclusion and attracting key talent.
  • Corporate Guide - a mid-level manager who would benefit from tools and resources for greater cultural fluency.
  • Fellow - a young professional who is racially or ethnically diverse (African American, Latino, Asian).
  • Direct Manager - a manager who directly supervises the Fellow.

Participants develop an awareness of their strengths, improvement areas, preferences, and biases through an intercultural Development Inventory and an Emotional Social Competence Inventory.

Academic Sessions
Academic sessions for Corporate Guides focus on bolstering their cultural fluency and building collaboration. As a result, they become more effective managers of diverse talent and improve their own value and mobility within the organization. Simultaneously, academic sessions for Fellows are designed with that reality in mind. Fellows learn how to navigate the corporate culture, how to interact with colleagues and managers, and how to contribute to the team and organization.

Networking opportunities allow participants to make valuable connections and reinforce what has been learned in the classroom.

Workshops are designed for the Corporate Guide and Fellows feature experts in talent development and cultural competency. Workshop topics include:

  • Emotional Intelligence
  • The Subtleties of Inclusion and Exclusion

Corporate Guides commit to engaging in ongoing coaching meetings with their assigned Fellow to build leadership skills by accessing tools and resources essential to becoming highly-effective coaches and leading high-performing teams. Fellows benefit by gaining insight into the "unwritten rules" of corporate life and how those rules apply within the specific organization.

The CII Moodle App
This digital resource supports Corporate Guides and Fellows, keeping them connected throughout the program and beyond. Corporate Guides can use the app to access coaching tools. All participants can feel part of a community rooted in shared values.

Cross-cultural competency increased!

  • Scores on the Intercultural Development Inventory increased for both Corporate Guides and Fellows!

Self-awareness increased!

  • The Orientation Gap on the IDI decreased for both Corporate Guides and Fellows!  This is a GOOD THING!
  • There was some alignment between number of sessions attended and changes in Orientation Gap (increased self-awareness
Participants who attended all sessions experienced decreases in Orientation Gap (speaks to increased self-awareness)

Featured Participants:

“I most appreciate the range of opportunities with cream of the crop speakers, facilitators, professors and assessors. CII offers interactive and online team sharing and learning; personalized testing and growth challenges; and a structure to support implementation of learnings in the workplace, but the life lessons transcend the office. This program provides those ‘aha’ moments and challenges you to be open and supportive of all peoples, and especially those who may be right next door—or across the city—who haven’t had the chance and need a chance to be heard, to be accepted, to be mentored or to be brought onto a team, because everyone has unique value to offer.”

– Suzanna Strangmeier, ComEd, An Exelon Company (CII Corporate Guide)

“The Corporate Inclusion Institute has been a pleasant surprise. This experience has allowed me as a leader to hear many different perspectives from my peers about the subject matter we have covered. My key take-away from CII has been, no matter how much you think you know, there is always room for a broader perspective and deeper understanding that has the potential to drive better outcomes for all involved.”

– Kevin Johnson, Aon (CII Corporate Guide)

“It has truly been an honor to have been selected to represent my organization in the Chicago United Corporate Inclusion Institute. The curriculum has been outstanding! The presenters and topics are relatable and the resources and tools provided have been useful in my current role. The thing that I value most about this program is sharing experiences and learning from such a talented and brilliant group of peers with such diverse backgrounds.”

– Vicki Gueringer-Williams, Nicor Gas (CII Fellow)

“Attending CII has been one of the most rewarding opportunities in my professional career. The topics discussed were extremely relevant and have equipped me with additional tools to be successful.”

– Julrene Hughes, ComEd (CII Fellow)

“The Corporate Inclusion Institute has enabled me to view the workplace through different lenses and has equipped me with the tools to become an advocate for diversity and inclusion.”

– Abraham Mendoza, The Options Clearing Corporation (CII Fellow)
