Discusses How Organizations are Retaining and Developing Talent
through BoardLink
Chicago United
produced a video that describes the value and benefits received
by the stakeholders using BoardLink. Through BoardLink, corporations
are provided a vehicle for communicating to employees that they
are seen as emerging leaders inside their organization and emerging
leaders gain access to opportunities to develop skills that will
expand their managerial experience and build business networks.
BoardLink also enables leading non-profit organizations to more
easily engage Chicago’s leaders of color in places where they
can impact the organization’s mission.
BoardLink
is an electronic referral source where leaders of color looking
for board opportunities can post their availability and non-profit
organizations in search of racially/ethnically diverse board members
can post their openings. Both groups have access to search listings,
share information, and make a connection. BoardLink addresses
an elusive challenge in the community. There is currently no similar
referral source available to the city’s non-profit sector.

Aging
and the Chicago Economy: Demographic Challenges and Opportunities 2008-2070
An Evening with Professor Geoffrey Hewings, Director of the Regional Economics Applications
Laboratory - Institute of Government and Public Affairs at the University of Illinois
Event Date: September 19, 2007
The internationally recognized professor discussed Immigration, Aging and the Chicago
Economy: Demographic Challenges and Opportunities 2008-2070.
Immigration now accounts
for 0.6% of the Chicago region’s annual population growth. Latino and African American
populations comprise 25% of the region’s population and are the source of most of
the demographic changes. Immigration yields an instantaneous impact on the economy
but many misconceptions dominate the public discourse. Professor Hewings presents
information to help us explore the critical questions:
- Is there evidence to
refute misconceptions and to explore the positive roles of immigration?
- By 2020 between 9-10%
of the region’s population will be over 65, what would be the impact with and without
immigration?
- What should we invest
now to ensure the continued growth and development of the region over the next 30
years?
By making a strong fact-based
case for economic inclusion, Hewings points out specific benefits of and strategies
for our city to offset the nation’s aging workforce by continuing our efforts to
integrate our ethnic and immigrant communities into our workforce.
