Chicago United
Gloria
Castillo is president of Chicago United, a corporate membership
organization, that brings together diverse business leaders to improve
race relations and increase access to opportunities for people of
color in the Chicago Metropolitan area.
Under
the leadership of Ms. Castillo, Chicago United has expanded its
programs and products including the annual Changing Color of Leadership
Conference and Bridge Awards dinner, the Business Leaders Forums
and the Chief Diversity Officer Roundtables.
Over
the years, Ms. Castillo has been a strong advocate for many civic
and community organizations. She has received the “Minority Small
Business Champion of the Year” award from the Small Business Administration
(SBA) June 2008; “The Best Business Agenda” from La Raza Newspaper
October 2008, and was awarded the 2006 Minority Business Advocate
of the Year by the U.S. Department of Commerce-Minority Business
Development Agency.
Ms.
Castillo was an active member of Chicago 2016 Olympic and Outreach
Advisory Committees serving as chair of the Workforce Development
sub committee. She is a Latino Initiative Senior Advisory Council
Member for United Way and served on the host committee for National
Council of LaRaza in July 2009. Ms. Castillo is also actively involved
with Camp CEO for Girl Scouts of Greater Chicago and Northwest Indiana.
Mayor
Richard M. Daley appointed Ms. Castillo to the Board of Directors
of the Chicago Workforce Investment Council (CWIC) June 2009 and
to the City Colleges of Chicago Board of Trustees in July 2005.
She was appointed to the Board of Directors of the Field Foundation
of Illinois in May of 2008.
Ms.
Castillo is a resource board member for the Metropolitan Planning
Council, a member of the Economic Club of Chicago, the Executive
Club of Chicago and The Chicago Network. She has served on the Board
of Trustees for the Goodman Theatre, Acción Chicago and Advisory
Council Chair of Mujeres Latinas en Acción. She is listed
among Crain’s Chicago Business 2009’s “Who’s Who in Chicago
Business” and a was a fellow in 1993-1994 leadership class
with Leadership Greater Chicago.
Prior
to joining Chicago United, Ms. Castillo spent over 20 years in advertising
and promotions as president of $5-million promotional products firm
Monarch Marketing Group, Inc.
In October 1993, the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Minority Business
Development Agency awarded Ms. Castillo and Mona Castillo as co-honorees
of their 1993 Minority Entrepreneurs of the Year Award.
Ms.
Castillo received the 1999 Entrepreneurial Women of the Year Award
from the Women’s Business Development Center (WBDC). Before joining
Monarch Marketing Group, Ms. Castillo was a senior account manger
for Redbook magazine.
Throughout
her career, Ms. Castillo has participated in various public speaking
engagements as a panelist, moderator and keynote speaker.
